Cuban National Zoo is different than any other in the country and many others around the world because all the animals, which they life style allow it, live in community out of fences.
A differentiated topographical zone was chosen to locate this park, that allows the animals an easier adaptation, the most similar possible to their original habitat.
This installation occupies an area of 340 hectares very well forested. It occupies the fifth place in Cuba with bird groups seen, around 130 endemic kinds. This place is considerate as one of the migratory birds corridor.
Also in this park are carry out investigations to warrantee the reproduction and breeding in captivity of valuable species, taking into account a correct feeding way, holding and veterinary attention. It is not a casualty this institution is placed next to the Ecology and Systematic Cuban Institute.
Our country also has a National Polytechnic Institute in Exotic and Wild Fauna, to form and prepare technical staff and main specialists who work there. They have also made scientist-technical interchanges with their homologues in other nations like Germany, Tanzania, Dominican Republic, Mexico, United States, United Kingdom, Spain and many others. As reciprocity, many foreign specialist have been trained here.
But visiting National Zoo is not only limited to see its exemplars, there are many other didactical-participative activities for visitors, such as abilities games, conferences about living animals, audiovisual conferences, etc.
Between the most popular areas of this park there is the lions' pit, it is a depression with high and big trees, stones and caves where the called jungle kings live as in their original habit. It is also very popular the African savanna, it has lakes for hippopotamus, like many other extensions where giraffes, zebras, antelopes, elephants and other species from the black continent live.
